The Fresno Beeis a newspaper based out of Fresno, California and was recently subpoenaed by a defense attorney for Larissa Schuster, who was convicted of murder.
The subpoenaed asked The Fresno Beeto hand over all the Internet protocol address (aka IP addresses) and dates for all the users that accessed the paper’s website during the time of the trial to ensure jurors did not violate the judge’s order refusing them from reading online stories about the case until they reached a verdict.
Betsy Lumbye, the executive editor and senior vice president of The Fresno Bee said she would not turn over the information.
“The idea that we’d violate readers’ privacy by digging up that kind of information and disclosing it is preposterous.”
A Fresno judges dismissed the subpoena claiming that Schuster’s layer had not provided enough reason to force The Fresno Bee to turn over the information
